Mornings Sung by Courtney Reed

The wonderful and talented Courtney Reed sang Mornings at a cabaret last night at the Laurie Beechman Theater in Manhattan. I’m so amazed by her talent and so honored that she would lend her incredible instrument to this song.

The great Zachary Dietz, conductor of In the Heights on Broadway, is accompanying.

Maybe Tonight

Lyrics

Maybe Tonight
Words and Music by Blythe Gruda and David J. Hahn

Yellow-green is the aura around you
I think that’s what she said
Tonight the air smells so sweet
It feels like it’ll linger for awhile

It’s really nice, you know, the way this is
Life keeps going on and on

Maybe tomorrow
Maybe tonight
Maybe someday
It’ll be alright

The fire burns through me through you
The world just turns and turns turning
We talk about these dreams until we yawn and close our eyes to sleep
The world just turns and turns turning

It’s really nice, you know, the way this is
Life keeps going on and on

Maybe tomorrow
Maybe tonight
Maybe someday
It’ll be alright

Lyrics

The Fallen Tree
Music and lyrics by David J. Hahn

As fog floats gently through the leaves and slowly out to sea,
the mem’ries fade like passing rain.
Stay well, my love
Safe, my love.

The storm has left a fallen tree.
There, grows a lonely evergreen.
So young so safe, there, in the fallen tree.

I walk there in the night.
The cool breeze dances in the trees.
Walk slow, walk slow, walk slow.

For there my fallen tree will lie, and, into dust, no more.
The rain sinks down, deep underground.
Stay well, my love
Safe, my love.

Summer Will Come Home Soon

Summer Will Come Home Soon
Music and Lyrics by David J. Hahn

Don’t take it too fast
Take your time, let it last
She was always meant to shine

Through the leaves and autumn storms
Green needles and silver thorns
Summer will come home soon

Hearts and memories and minds
It all takes time
So winters come and winters go

Wait to take your chance
The sun will bring romance
And summer will come home soon

[Chorus]
I know that you’ll come home
For you left your heart with mine
Autumn winds just seem to blow away

So I’ll wait for winter skies
To send down their snow
And trust in the kindness of time

Summer’s gone

Now that she’s not around
Think of all the things you’ve found
That summer glow will last through the year

By spring it’ll start to grow
When it’s May again you’ll know
That summer will come home soon

Savor wind and rain and sun
When winter and spring are done
This summer was …

Mornings

I wrote this song late last night and my friend Blythe Gruda came by and recorded it.

I also sang a version of it, and you can listen to that here:

Lyrics

Mornings
Music and Lyrics by David J. Hahn

My hands just pound the ground
Useless and empty
It’s funny how things change without you around

I’ve found a time of day that helps me forget
About our mornings
When your hair would hang like rain

It’s at night by the light
Of the cars taking their parade
Then morning seems far away

If I’ve learned anything
From the time you’ve been away
It’s that I can live my life alone

But those mornings take me
Twist me, misshape me
‘Til I cannot bear the light

But instead of sleeping through
I try to be glad that I found you
‘Cause mornings come everyday

So though I prefer to see the night
I’m starting again …

I Cannot Leave the Man

Lyrics

I Cannot Leave the Man
Music and Lyrics by David J. Hahn

Mamma oh Mamma I cannot leave the man
Mamma oh Mamma you must understand
He holds his love and gives it like a drug
And I need it
So I cannot leave this man

I know he loves and I know he’s there
but it crumbles and rots when it hits the air
He’s a good man, he’s strong, he’s able, he’s true
Yet the days are so long I just stumble through

Mama I know that he’s never home
Still I’m scared to think I might be alone
For at night I can feel his skin next to mine
As I hold my heart against his spine

[chorus]

When I look in the mirror I hate what I see
And the man I love sees the same in me
I know it’s wrong but I cannot be free
For without this man I cannot live with …

In Deference to the King

Yesterday I promised on Facebook that my next song would be “Jack Johnson Always Gets My Deference”. That didn’t come out, but I did fit “deference” into this one.

Lyrics

Falling Back To You
Words and Music by David J. Hahn

Verse 1
In deference to the king
I’ve taken back the ring
And left you all alone

My pride is on the line
It’s taken me some time
To let this one go

It’s not that I’m afraid
It’s not that I’m not brave
I just can’t get out

Verse 2
I’ve been taken by the sun
And rushed through all the fun
But now I’ll take my time

Give up my spot in line
And let my life unwind
In deference to the king

But it’s hard to sooth my mind
It’s hard to fill the time
Without you

[Chorus]
Take a number off the wall
Please someone take them all
There’s too much light inside this place
The walls are falling in this place
Falling …
